SGT is investigating Roku for illegally collecting children's data in violation of federal and state privacy laws.
A lawsuit filed on April 29, 2025, by the Michigan Attorney General alleges that Roku secretly gathers children’s personal information—including precise location data, IP addresses, and viewing histories—and shares it with advertisers and data brokers, all without the parental notice and verifiable consent that the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires.
According to the Michigan AG’s complaint, Roku:
- Embeds child-focused programming across its platform and markets “10,000+ FREE kids’ shows and movies,” yet offers no child profiles or effective parental controls, ensuring kids and adults are tracked alike.
- Allows third-party channels and data brokers to harvest children’s data for targeted ads and detailed behavioral profiles.
- Retains and discloses children’s voice commands captured through Roku remotes and smart-TV microphones, despite FTC guidance that such recordings should be deleted immediately after use.
Silver Golub & Teitell pioneered private COPPA enforcement. We serve as lead class counsel in the actions against Google, YouTube, and Epic Games, and we are one of three firms on the court-appointed leadership team in the nationwide TikTok litigation. Based on that experience, we believe Roku’s alleged conduct—if proven—would violate state consumer-protection statutes and common-law privacy rights. We are now investigating the same claims against Roku on behalf of parents and children.
