From the Community — Whacked: Impact, Sports, and Young Athletes’ Brains

January 17, 2018

Community Contributor UConn Foundation, Hartford Courant (January 16, 2018) -- Concussions aren't just limited to the National Football League or former boxers. Surprisingly, the athletes most at risk of brain injury are kids playing a variety of sports, including football, soccer, and lacrosse.

The impact of concussions on youth sports serves as the centerpiece for the second event of UConn's 2018 Science Salon series entitled Whacked: Impact, Sports, and Young Athletes' Brains. An expert panel includes:
• Moderator: Eric Kopp, Co-Director of Clinical Education/Physical Therapist, ProEx Physical Therapy
• Dr. Anthony Alessi, Associate Clinical Professor of Neurology and Orthopedics; Director, UConn NeuroSport Program; and Adjunct Professor of Kinesiology, UConn Musculoskeletal Institute
• Joanne Conover, Associate Professor, Physiology and Neurobiology, UConn College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
• Bob Howard, Assistant Director of Athletics and Head Athletic Trainer, UConn
• Paul Slager, Partner, Silver, Golub & Teitell LLP

The public is invited to attend the discussion on Thursday, February 8 in the YG Club at Dunkin' Donuts Park in downtown Hartford from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The cost is $15 per person, which includes the panel discussion, drinks, light appetizers, and a complimentary tour of the ballpark, with registration online. Two other Science Salon events will be held in other locations across the state.
