2nd annual ‘Peace, Love & Music from Maren’ honors slain Milford student

May 3, 2016

MILFORD >> The community Saturday will for a second year celebrate the life of Maren Sanchez, a popular junior at Jonathan Law High School who was slain in school by another student two years ago on prom day.

Money raised through the “Peace, Love & Music from Maren,” event — to be held at Law — will benefit a scholarship fund in Sanchez’s honor. Last year, more than 3,000 people attended, according to a press release, and more than $55,000 was awarded to graduating seniors from both Law and Joseph A. Foran High School.

“There is not a day that goes by where Maren is not remembered or spoken about,” said Law’s principal, Fran Thompson. He said the event was “overwhelmingly successful” last year and helped many students. There is a garden at the school dedicated to Sanchez.

Thompson noted on the school’s website that Monday’s return from the school’s vacation week marked the second anniversary of Sanchez’s death and would be a “difficult day” for many students and staff. Counseling was made available, Thompson wrote, encouraging students to wear purple, Sanchez’s favorite color.
