SGT Partner Paul A. Slager To Speak at The Norwalk Youth Concussion Summit

SGT partner Paul A. Slager will speak at The Norwalk Youth Concussion Summit tonight on “Educating Coaches and Parents Does Not Increase Liability” and will also moderate a panel with several local youth sports representatives.

Hosted by the Mayor of Norwalk, Harry Rilling, the Norwalk Department of Health, Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff and Executive Director of Pink Concussions Katherine Price Snedaker, the event focuses on creating a “Concussion Care Connected Community” and draws together medical providers, youth sports leaders and school officials to discuss the success of the new Norwalk Concussion Guidelines and plan for the coming year.

The event will be held in The Community Room, Norwalk City Hall, 125 East Avenue, starting at 7:00 pm.

The panel Slager will moderate will feature a first-hand discussion of their experiences so far with the Norwalk Concussion Guidelines from:

• Norwalk Recreation & Parks Department: Mike Mocciae
• Norwalk Junior Soccer: Robert Fosina
• Norwalk Junior Lacrosse: Jack Couch
• Weston Youth Football: Rep. John Shaban
• Parents Concussion Coalition: Diane Coyne or Pippa Ader, Westport mothers of sons with concussions

The Norwalk Concussion Guidelines is dedicated to Jonathan Brown, a late resident of Norwalk, 22, who died in 2012, in memory of his love for sports and for the message for young kids participating in any physical activities to never take a head injury lightly.

Norwalk was the first city in Connecticut to enact concussion guidelines for organized youth sports programs which utilized Norwalk recreation facilities. The guidelines were created to close the loophole that exists in the current Connecticut Concussion Law which protects only public middle and high school athletes who play for their school-sponsored teams. Only one out of every 11 Norwalk Students is covered by the state law. The Norwalk Guidelines increased protection to six out of every 11 students when it was passed in April 2015 by the Norwalk Recreation & Parks Department and the Norwalk Common Council.
